    The effect direction plot: visual display of non-standardised effects across multiple outcome domains

    Visual display of reported impacts is a valuable aid to both reviewers and readers of systematic reviews. Forest plots are routinely prepared to report standardised effect sizes, but where standardised effect sizes are not available for all included studies a forest plot may misrepresent the available evidence. Tabulated data summaries to accompany the narrative synthesis can be lengthy and inaccessible. Moreover, the link between the data and the synthesis conclusions may be opaque. This paper details the preparation of visual summaries of effect direction for multiple outcomes across 29 quantitative studies of the health impacts of housing improvement. A one page summary of reported health outcomes was prepared to accompany a 10 000-word narrative synthesis. The one page summary included details of study design, internal validity, sample size, time of follow-up, as well as changes in intermediate outcomes, for example, housing condition. This approach to visually summarising complex data can aid the reviewer in cross-study analysis and improve accessibility and transparency of the narrative synthesis where standardised effect sizes are not available

    Model predictive control architecture for rotorcraft inverse simulation

    A novel inverse simulation scheme is proposed for applications to rotorcraft dynamic models. The algorithm adopts an architecture that closely resembles that of a model predictive control scheme, where the controlled plant is represented by a high-order helicopter model. A fast solution of the inverse simulation step is obtained on the basis of a lower-order, simplified model. The resulting control action is then propagated forward in time using the more complex one. The algorithm compensates for discrepancies between the models by updating initial conditions for the inverse simulation step and introducing a simple guidance scheme in the definition of the tracked output variables. The proposed approach allows for the assessment of handling quality potential on the basis of the most sophisticated model, while keeping model complexity to a minimum for the computationally more demanding inverse simulation algorithm. The reported results, for an articulated blade, single main rotor helicopter model, demonstrate the validity of the approach

    The purpose of the crash safety program is to support development of the technology to define and demonstrate new structural concepts for improved crash safety and occupant survivability in general aviation aircraft. The program involves three basic areas of research: full-scale crash simulation testing, nonlinear structural analyses necessary to predict failure modes and collapse mechanisms of the vehicle, and evaluation of energy absorption concepts for specific component design. Both analytical and experimental methods are being used to develop expertise in these areas. Analyses include both simplified procedures for estimating energy absorption capabilities and more complex computer programs for analysis of general airframe response. Full-scale tests of typical structures as well as tests on structural components are being used to verify the analyses and to demonstrate improved design concepts

    Network power flow analysis for a high penetration of distributed generation

    Increasing numbers of very small generators are being connected to electricity distribution systems around the world. Examples include photovoltaics (PV) and gas-fired domestic-scale combined heat and power (micro-CHP) systems, with electrical outputs in the region of 1 to 2 kW. These generators are normally installed within consumers' premises and connected to the domestic electricity supply network (230 V single-phase in Europe, 120 V in North America). There is a growing need to understand and quantify the technical impact that high penetrations of such generators may have on the operation of distribution systems. This paper presents an approach to analyzing this impact together with results indicating that considerable penetrations of micro-generation can be accommodated in a typical distribution system

    Declining enrollments and financial restraints require that science departments seek ways to meet academic commitments within the framework of reduced budgets and faculty resources without sacrificing quality programs. The following describes our evaluation of the role of the laboratory in the undergraduate biology curriculum and the positive effects achieved on our academic, financial, and faculty resources by separating labs from lecture courses and reducing the number of labs required for majors and nonmajors. Several years ago we experienced increased enrollments coupled with only modest increases in funds to deliver our undergraduate instructional programs. To resolve this problem we developed a new approach to the role of lecture and laboratory courses for our biology majors, the nonmajor, and the students in the allied health programs serviced by our department. The changes effected by us then would appear to be equally appropriate in today\u27s economy when inflationary pressures and a decline in students make it imperative that departments look to ways to meet their academic commitments within the framework of declining budgets and faculty resources

    A self-managing infrastructure for ad-hoc situation determination

    Automatically determining the situation of an ad-hoc group of people and devices within a smart environment is a significant challenge in pervasive computing systems. Current approaches often rely on an environment expert to correlate the situations that occur with the available sensor data, while other machine learning based approaches require long training periods before the system can be used. This paper presents a novel approach to situation determination that attempts to overcome these issues by providing a reusable library of general situation specifications that can be easily extended to create new specific situations, and immediately deployed without the need of an environment expert. The architecture of an accompanying situation determination infrastructure is provided, which autonomously optimises and repairs itself in reaction to changes or failures in the environment

    Towards dynamic context discovery and composition

    Context-awareness has been identified as a key characteristic for pervasive computing systems. As a variety of context-aware environments begin to flourish, pervasive applications shall have to interact different environments well. In this paper we propose extensions to the Strathclyde Context Infrastructure that gives context-aware applications the potential to adapt to unfamiliar environments transparently. We present a vision of a context discovery technique based on automated semantic reasoning about context information and services. The technique will offer higher levels of scalability and of interoperability with new context environments that cannot be achieved with current methods
